The Night Approaches

The night approaches with hunger,
Brings with it darkness and fear,
Driving before it the daylight,
Like a fleeing thundering herd.

Beasts fall quiet into the silence,
Beneath the onslaught of shadows
Hunter and prey flee together,
For the night defies every norm.

Where hot lightning strikes,
Thunder obliterates all quiet,
Shattering the velvet gloom;
For the night too is fleeing a storm.

Arms of trees, strange patterns weave,
Wizards casting dread-wrought spells.
When magic fails, nature prevails,
Trees then collapse, weeping still.

Twee creatures shrink from the dark,
At every thunderous clap.
Dire dread pounds, a lingering chill;
In silence, scared heartbeats race.

Long hours fade, lost leaves fly away,
Forever vanished in night
Dawn’s tendrils invest the night,
Enticing the birth of the new day.
