Now Mary McWhirter, was known as a flirter,
Her laughter was light as the day,
With beauty beguiling, manners all-smiling,
She’d charm every soul in her way.
Through candlelit halls, at grand midnight balls,
Her waltz would keep shadows at bay,
Yet while she was dancing, in moonlight entrancing,
Dark eyes from the shadows did stray.
For watching her gleam, as though in a dream,
Was a figure both grave and fey,
Lord Dracula spied, and softly sighed,
“She’ll walk in my shadow one day”.
He found her alone, by marble and stone,
Where the candles were flickering grey
She trembled in wonder, in silence fell under,
The weight of his ghostly sway.
His voice was a river, that caused her to shiver,
And slowly her heart lost its way,
She felt her soul turning, like candles were burning,
Her will slipping silent away.
He whispered her name, in accents of flame,
As moonlight dissolved into day,
Then darkly he smiled, both gentle and wild,
And sorrowfully took her away.
The dawn did not find her, no mortal reminds her,
Of warmth long since gone grey,
For now, in his keeping, when daylight is sleeping,
She rises to wander and sway.
Her beauty immortal, behind the dark portal,
She dreams where no prayers can stay,
And still on the heather, they dance close together,
Till night turns again into day.
