Now I Understand

As we say our first goodbye,
I beg, please let me be clear,
I’ll carry you through all my days,
My loving mother dear.

You brought me to this fragile world,
Through trials dark and near—
You were my guarding angel,
Through every passing year.

Even when I spread my wings,
And fled your cozy nest,
You always helped to guide me—
It’s true! Mother knows best!

I follow your example,
As I do my daily chores,
Seeing of right from wrong,
Another gift of yours.

Dwelling not upon the past,
Positive and bright,
You gave me love without regret,
And never shirked your fight.

I always tried to give it back,
Sometimes it seems in vain,
You taught me it’s a one-way street—
Parent to child, the bond remains.

Mindful of your example,
As gentle as a dove,
To my child and her dear boys,
I give my grandfather’s love.

Though in thought I say goodbye,
With each and every morn,
I know that we’ll meet again,
Once my final breath is drawn.
A photorealistic, emotionally tender scene: an elderly woman and her grown adult son sit side by side on a comfortable couch, holding hands. The elderly woman wears a distinctive butterfly hair clasp. Above the son is a subtle thought balloon showing a warm childhood memory of this same woman, younger but recognizable, cradling him as a small child; she wears the same distinctive butterfly hair clasp in the memory. Natural living-room lighting, authentic expressions, respectful family affection, cinematic photography, realistic skin and fabric textures. No text.
